Repair Cafe volunteers fix an old railing at Locust Lawn

Gardener – HISTORIC locust lawn

Historic Locust Lawn House and Farm holds unusual “themed” Repair Cafes. The events are called “The Timeless Art of Repair…” For our great-grandparents, repairing was a necessity of life. But the techniques they employed and materials they used were very different from today.

Attendees see how things were repaired in the past...and can also bring an item to be repaired today. These Repair Cafes include demonstrations of “antique skills” such as instrument repair, pewter ware and tin work, darning, and others, and displays of craftily & cleverly repaired items from generations past (such as a mug handle replaced with tin or a glass vessel fastened with staples). These events are held in the warm months only, in the unheated stone farmhouse across the lawn from the historic Hasbrouck House.
